Yurt Rentals at Maple Wind Farm

Welcome to our 10th year offering outdoor enthusiasts a unique getaway in the Green Mountains of Vermont in our comfortable wood and canvas Mongolian style yurts.

Location: Maple Wind Farm is in Huntington, Vermont, which lies 25 miles southeast of Burlington bordering the Camel’s Hump State Forest. The farm is at the end of a high dirt road at 1600′ with sweeping views to the West of the Green Mountains. In the skyline of our town is one of the 4 alpine peaks in the state over 4000′ called Camels Hump. Downhill and Telemark skiers will be interested to know that we are only 6.5 miles away from Mad River Glen Ski Area.

The Setting: Yurts are located on our 140-acre farm with wonderful opportunities to hike, snowshoe and backcountry ski right out the yurt door, for all abilities. Paths from the farm, link up with the Long and Catamount Ski Trails (hiking and ski trails that run the length of Vermont). In addition to managed trails, you can also enjoy wandering the open meadows of our farm as well as escaping into the woods to catch glimpses of many kinds of birds and woodland creatures.

Yurt Highlights: You’ll find our 24′ round yurts a great place to stay with friends and family. We have two yurts about 300 yards apart from one another. The Maple and the Spruce yurts, appropriately named, are nestled in quiet corners of our property. Once you are settled into your yurt, you will feel as though you’re miles from civilization and can start your backcountry experience (Although you may hear a cow from our pasture or one of our dogs bark!) Spacious and cozy for 10 folks to bunk in for the night, you’ll sleep on handmade wooden bunk beds.  The rest of the yurt is equipped with a kitchen area, eating area, woodstove and a composting outhouse (see link for full list of what to bring and what is in the yurt). We expect our guests to use their Leave No Trace camping skills while staying in our yurts to leave it clean and tidy for the next folks.

The Approach: Once you’ve arrived at Maple Wind Farm, you will find ample parking (we do suggest carpooling!). We provide water jugs and sleds (in the winter) for you to take to the yurt with all of your gear. Getting to either yurt takes about 10 minutes walking or skiing to a distant corner of our property. Inside you will find a packet with helpful yurt things to know and a guest book we hope you sign before your departure.

Our Farm/Who we are: Maple Wind Farm has been in operation since 1999, with Bruce Hennessey and Beth Whiting, at the helm. They used to run On the Loose Expeditions, an adventure travel company that guided folks on journeys and adventures in far reaches of the world.  In 2009 we decided to close the doors of On the Loose and just focus on the farm.  In the winter, Bruce is a part time telemark ski  instructor and Beth focuses on her school committees and planning next season’s garden. They both adore spending time with their children, Bryn and David, doing farm chores, cooking, swimming, or skiing.

Our farm’s mission is to grow the healthiest possible food for our family and customers. We raise 100% grass fed beef and lamb, pasture raised pork and organic poultry (chickens and turkeys) as well as eggs. We also have a 50 member vegetable CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and recently have added maple syrup! For more information, please peruse our website. As you will see, we have two wind turbines on the property. We are committed to alternate energy systems and we also use solar and horse power in much of our operation.

Making the connection to the food we offer: Should your stay include wanting to know more about our farm, please contact us beforehand to arrange a farm tour, or come down and follow us doing chores.  If you would like to have some product to eat during your stay or to take home its best to email Beth to arrange a sale.  All of the meat is frozen. Organic farm fresh eggs are available for yurt breakfasts!

Most popular yurt guest meat requests: Ground Beef, Bacon, Sausage, Pork Chops, Beef Steaks, Eggs

Cost: Our nightly rate is $140/night for exclusive yurt use (plus 9% rooms and meals tax). Provided in that fee is a clean yurt, wood, propane and the use of the kitchen items (see list). We have a special rate for school/youth groups, contact us for details.
